Abstract
Wales' defense of Richard O'Dwyer based first on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, then on a somewhat vaguer line, roughly paraphrased as "those rich guys in Hollywood shouldn't get to hoard all the culture".

Notes
The EFF on Section 230.

A direct link to 47 U.S. Code § 230

Jimmy Wales cannot be said not to have any interest in this debate, since much of Wikipedia is recycled culture. Hard working unpaid Wikipediants have managed to create en.wiki (for example). These workers voluntarily swear off any "sweat of the brow" property rights that could accrue from their work of careful paraphrasing or photographing the world.
