Swartz argues that the core contention that Wales was making at the time seemed misleading. Wales' claim was that nearly three quarters of the edits to the encyclopedia were being by "the 2%" – a superclass of particularly zealous unpaid volunteers. Swartz countered with a study of the number of characters added which painted a very different picture. Most of the "meat" of the articles came from the anonymous crowd, while the proofreading, paring down, and vandalism reversion came from register "Gang of 500" type users.
One comment on the article summarized this aspect of the article:
"The bad sign is that those who groom this monkey seem to have taken control of the project by setting themselves up as a hierarchy via voting eligibility rules.
The people Aaron shows to have crafted the content are largely disenfranchised while the “eyeshade editors†rule."
